Yesterday, The New Mutants director Josh Boone revealed that Zorro actor Antonio Banderas was supposed to be in a post-credits scene for the X-Men spinoff movie, however, the scene was cut because of Disney's acquisition of 21st Century Fox.
It turns out, Banderas was supposed to star in the sequel for New Mutants. Speaking in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Boone explained the post-credits scene that he had planned for the movie and how it never made principal photography even though Banderas had been cast for a part. According to Boone, he and his team always "planned to have a tag at the end of the movie that introduced the villain for the next" entry in The New Mutant flm series.
Banderas was cast to play Emmanuel de Costa, the father of Sunspot, otherwise known as Roberto (Henry Zaga). According to Boone, The New Mutant sequel would have taken the main characters to Brazil so that they could save Roberto's mother from Emmanuel.
We always intended to do New Mutants: Brazil as the second movie," the filmmaker told the entertainment news outlet.
New Mutants: Brazil would have also introduced popular comic book characters like Karma, a mutant with the ability to mentally possess others, and Warlock, a member of the Technarchy race. While it's such a shame that the New Mutants sequel is never going to happen now that Disney's merged with Fox, we're excited to see the X-Men finally make their way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The New Mutants is set to premiere on April 3.
