Ant-Man 3 Writer Addresses Speculations on Kang and Janet’s Relationship

We learned during the events of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania that Janet van Dyne and Kang the Conqueror used to spend a lot of time together in the Quantum Realm as both of them were stuck in the world and figuring out how they can get out.

However, when Janet learned that Kang conquered and destroyed a lot of timelines, the two faced off and Janet decided to use her Pym Particles to enlarge the power core which made it impossible for them to escape from the world permanently.

While Janet and Kang didn't obviously get along together, there are fans who are still wondering whether the two have a relationship back when they were stuck in the Quantum Realm.

In an interview with IGN, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania writer Jeff Loveness addressed the fan speculation regarding the two characters where he hinted that perhaps the two have a relationship although he remained vague about its actual possibility.

"Ohhhhhh. I mean, yeah you got Mr. Hunk over there all day, so mysterious. He’s got his little orb. I mean, I don’t know what’s in that orb," he explained.

"I intentionally left it a little vague, but clearly – let’s say they’re very good friends [laughs]. And I think sometimes we’re in kind of this YouTube reaction video world where everyone wants every little detail explained. And I don’t think I ascribe to that. I think there’s a magic in what is unsaid and what is not explicitly said."

Loveness also shared that he felt that every detail does not need an explanation. He also cited Jane Austen's novels as examples of the relationship that Janet and Kang have while in the Quantum Realm.

"I love Jane Austen novels or English novels [that] are very sexually repressed. I’m sexually repressed. But I think there’s a lot of strength in those types of relationships that could go either way. And maybe it did, maybe it didn’t," the writer continued to explain.

"Maybe that’s a reason she didn’t want to tell her family about it. That’s part of it. And maybe she didn’t want to tell the family or the Avengers about it, because if they went down there, he would fuckin’ kill them. Or he would get their Pym Particles and get out."

He also compared Janet's situation to a grandfather whenever they tell a story from their past, "It’s something that, it’s like your grandpa talking about what happened to him in the Pacific Theater in 1944. Best not to bring it up. And because if you bring it up, it’s going to hurt a lot more people. But yeah, maybe they had sex. Who knows?"

While the writer was vague in his response, he did suggest that the two having a sexual relationship was a possibility so there might be some truth to the speculations that fans have. Now, it's interesting to see whether they'll explore that facet of the characters moving forward.
