Angelina Jolie Pushed To Develop Maleficent’s Surprise Relationship In The Sequel

Disney fans were pretty surprised when they saw the relationship between Angelina Jolie's tragic villain-turned-anti-hero and Sam Riley's Diaval, a shapeshifting raven, in the very first Maleficent movie. Fans' reactions to the relationship left such an impression on Jolie, so much so that the Hollywood A-lister pushed for Maleficent and Diaval taking on a new level of understanding in the film's sequel, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.

Speaking in a recent interview with TooFab, Sam Riley discussed the development in the relationship between Maleficent and Diaval admitting that it was a good move for Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. The actor even goes talking about how the development plays out in the Maleficent sequel.

"We had a lot of fun doing it because Angie sort of felt that our relationship was one of the things that people did enjoy about the first one and how we could, you know, make even more out of it and more out of this sort of this old married couple relationship. They bicker with one another, but, you know he adores her," the actor revealed.

We can't help but gush over the idea of Maleficent and Diaval being an "old married couple." Sure, the phrase does imply a bit of dramatic baggage between the two, but it also suggests familiarity and a sense of warmth. Based on Riley's description, Maleficent and Diaval have taken things to the next level.

Right now there's a lot of anticipation building up over Mistress of Evil. Early reviews for the film have been largely positive with previous naysayers of the film series turning around for the Maleficent sequel.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is set to fly into cinemas on October 18, 2019.
