America Chavez Creator Shares Regret Over Marvel's Publishing Deal Before Doctor Strange 2

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is confirmed to feature multiple characters from the past and an MCU newcomer, America Chavez. The Doctor Strange sequel will be the debut of the Marvel Comics character who will be played by Xochitl Gomez. Before Chavez's official debut, the marvel character had been wandering around the pages of Marvel Comics.

America Chavez was created by Joe Casey and Nick Dragotta. Chavez made her first appearance in 2011's Vengeance. After her debut in the Comics, she then appeared in multiple issues like 2013's Young Avengers and 2015's Ultimates. After lots of supporting roles in the Comics, Chavez finally led to her own solo Comic series in 2016.

Now that the character is set to debut in the MCU, America Chavez creator Joe Casey opened up about the issues he went through, specifically a well-documented compensation issue under Marvel's publishing brand.

While talking to Comicbook.com, Casey sat down to discuss America Chavez's upcoming live-action debut in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. When asked if he could've done more creative control for the character into other media, Casey shared regrets about creating the character under Marvel's publishing due to the company's history of underpaying their creators. Casey explained, "Only when I consider how much cash this Doctor Strange sequel is going to rake in...! In all seriousness, it was probably not the wisest move on my part to create any new characters for Marvel Publishing -- considering their spotty track record on dealing fairly with creators -- however, in the case of America Chavez, I did it, and regardless of where things are at on that front, I'm definitely psyched to see her in a movie that costs more than the GNP of certain developing nations."

While Casey is still 'psyched' for Chavez's live-action debut, he furtherly discussed Chavez's qualities that epitomize a traditional Marvel hero:

"Well, one reason -- and I think this speaks to her inclusion in the movie -- is that she just seems to fit into the Marvel Universe. She's unlike any other Marvel character but she shares a lot of the qualities that epitomize a traditional Marvel hero. One of the main reasons why I created her in the first place was to come up with a character who could stand proudly alongside the other classic Marvel icons like Iron Man and Spider-Man. But let's face it, if we're all being honest here, she's had a rather bizarre journey in the comics. That's no secret."

Casey continued to explain his hype for America Chavez's live-action debut, "Luckily, her basic appeal has never wavered and her fans are incredibly loyal. And I'd like to think -- as with anything that's being adapted and adjusted for another medium -- her appearance in the MCU is a chance to distill the character back down to the best version of her, and strip away at least some of the creative detritus that might've accumulated in the comics over the last decade. For the movie, they can pick and choose the best bits. It's very cool, but on the other hand, this is just the latest in a fairly long string of America Chavez appearances in other media -- everything from video games to action figures to animation to apparel to bedsheets and probably beyond, areas in which she's already made an impression outside of the comics."

After Casey's statement, Marvel's unfair payment practices should change since the creators are the very roots of the films and characters that we enjoy on the big screens. And it is not the first time that a Marvel creator vented out about the industry's unfair payment. Last 2021, The Winter Soldier creator Ed Brubaker expressed his disappointments while seeing the ad for The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, quoting "kind of feel sick to his stomach," says that he is disappointed watching his creation make a ton of millions without the company acknowledging him properly.

For America Chavez, Casey hasn't discussed Chavez's future in the MCU and we still don't have any further details about her substantial role in Multiverse of Madness. But according to her statement, Chavez will definitely shine in the long run for the future of the MCU. Recent reports also claim that the MCU is crafting a Young Avengers lineup and Chavez is a perfect addition to the team.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will hit the big screens on May 6.
