I think we can all agree that Loki Laufeyson has always been one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's more compelling characters and there's a reason why he's been continuously brought back to the dance despite "dying" on several occasions. Last year, the beloved anti-hero was finally given his long-overdue spotlight via the standalone Loki series which was so well-received, it was given a second season.

Now, while we still don't know much about Loki Season 2's premise, its lead star Tom Hiddleston seems to tease that his time as the God of Mischief isn't for certain. In a recent interview with Variety, Hiddleston offered quite the intriguing remark about playing the character. Apparently, despite portraying Loki on both the big and small screens for over a decade now, Tom still feels that his tenure isn't permanent.

He explains: "I'm a temporary torchbearer. I've always thought that. It's a great role. It's an archetype, the trickster god, the agent of chaos. I'm just here interpreting that for the time being. Loki has been here for centuries and will be here for centuries more and I'm just stepping into that silhouette for now."

Hiddleston's "torchbearer" remark is quite cryptic but what he probably meant by it is that since Loki is a shapeshifting character, he can be portrayed by virtually anyone. Or maybe he was alluding to the fact that the concept of variants now exists in the MCU and his own series pretty much introduced us to several alternate Lokis. One thing's for sure though, it would be a damn shame if he stops playing the character.

Loki Season 2 is currently in development. Meanwhile, all episodes of Season 1 are available for streaming on Disney+.
