AMC Announces 3rd Walking Dead Spinoff Centered on Female Characters

AMC's The Walking Dead had been limping ever since it lost the main character Rick Grimes, and the spinoff Fear the Walking Dead has never really gotten the same prestige as the original show. What's interesting is, AMC has just greenlit a thirdThe Walking Dead spinoff, and it will be a sort of coming-of-age show.

During their New York Summit (via Skybound), AMC announced that this TWD spinoff "will feature two young female protagonists and focus on the first generation to come-of-age in the apocalypse as we know it. Some will become heroes. Some will become villains. In the end, all of them will be changed forever. Grown-up and cemented in their identities, both good and bad."

The show will be run by Matt Negrete who has also been involved with the making of the main Walking Dead series. Scott Gimple, showrunner of TWD, says this about Negrete taking on another spinoff:

"Showing audiences an unseen pocket of The Walking Dead universe steeped in a new mythology is a very cool way to celebrate a ‘Decade of the Dead' on TV and over 15 years of Robert Kirkman's brilliant comic… Matt Negrete is one of the best writer-producers in TWD's long history — I'm thrilled to be working beside him to tell stories unlike we've seen before, taking our first step into an even larger world."

The show is still untitled, but it is expected to come out sometime in 2020. While all of these shows have centered on characters who used to live in the ‘normal world', I guess it would be interesting to see it from the eyes of people who have only ever been in a world of the undead.

AMC's Walking Dead spinoff is set to premiere sometime in 2020.
