All Magic: The Gathering Hound Cards Being Changed to Dogs

Magic: The Gathering's Core Set 2021 will feature Dog cards instead of Hounds, but this is not just limited to one set. All the Hound cards from previous MTG sets will also be changed.

On Wizards of the Coast's official MTG website, Magic head designer Mark Rosewater recently explained in a blog post why Magic featured hounds instead of dogs.

"Bill Rose was the champion for the Hound side," Rosewater said. "His argument was that Hound felt more fantasy. Hell Hounds, for example, were a popular creature in Dungeons & Dragons. He felt it was important that we try and make the game feel more regal and less mundane."

Rosewater said that he was not happy with the decision to use Hounds instead of Dogs back in the day, but after 20-plus years, he finally made Dogs become an official part of Magic.

"I was the champion for the Dog side. My argument was that we were going to make a lot of dogs over the years. People liked dogs. And there were a lot of different kinds of dogs," Rosewater wrote. "Ultimately, when Erik Lauer joined the R&D division, Rosewater was able to convince him-and others-to make the change."

Core Set 2021 features new dog cards like Pack Leader, Alpine Watchdog, Rumbunctious Mutt, Selfless Savior, Bolt Hound, Chandra's Magmutt, and Igneous Cur. Rin and Seri, Insperable also features a dog.
