Agents of SHIELD Star Shares Why Daniel Sousa's Return was Important to Fans with Disabilities

There is little doubt that fans were excited when Daniel Sousa showed up in Agents of SHIELD Season 7. After all, the character first appeared in Agent Carter and there were theories that he would end up becoming Peggy Carter's husband. However, there's another reason why Enver Gjokaj was eager to reprise his role in the ABC series. Interestingly, it has a lot to do with representing people with disabilities.

Gjokaj recently spoke to Collider where he admitted that he didn't hesitate in taking the role since "very rarely do you get to revisit a character that you really love to play." In addition to that, he pointed out that Sousa means a lot to fans who also live with disabilities.

"Sometimes, as an actor, you don't feel like you're making a big difference, but then the character that you play with a disability makes such a big difference to somebody's life and you realize that representation on screen does make a difference. It's cool. Those things mean a lot to me," Gjokaj said.

In the shows, Sousa is a war veteran who experiences prejudice due to his crippled leg. Agent Carter has shown how the character has suffered but also fights against the mistreatment, which is a truly positive message to other people with disabilities. Needless to say, we're glad that Gjokaj has been given the chance to continue playing Sousa.

The final season of Agents of SHIELD airs on ABC every Wednesday nights.
