Across the Spider-Verse Director Says Spider-Man 2099 is NOT The Villain

If you've seen the teasers for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, you probably see Miguel O'Hara as the possible villain of the animated sequel. However, co-director Kemp Powers says Spider-Man 2099 is not the bad guy that Miles Morales has to worry about in the highly anticipated film.

Kemp Powers was recently interviewed for SFX Magazine where he clarified Spider-Man 2099's side of things in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (via GamesRadar).

"Miguel definitely becomes an antagonist to Miles, but his goals are very understandable," he said. "Some people might side with Miles's perspective, but some people might side with Miguel's."

"You know, Miguel is the leader of this Spider-Force for a reason," Powers continues. "He bears this incredible sense of responsibility."

"Spider-Man has always been your friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man, and Miguel is very different in that his responsibilities go way beyond any one neighbourhood," he added.

"He's just a fascinating character, but he's not a villain. He's a good guy," Powers concluded.

Kemp Powers isn't the only one defending Miguel O'Hara's actions in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Shameik Moore, who plays Miles Morales in the sequel, pointed out that his character just wants to be accepted by Spider-Man 2099 and "is heartbroken by Miguel."

"He's like, 'Dude, I just wanted to be a part of your society, I'm the coolest Spider there is," Moore explained. "But, if you want to be like that, then be like that, you're not gonna stop me.'"

We're certainly hoping that Miguel O'Hara opens up to the possibility of working with Miles Morales. In the meantime, we're looking forward to seeing the strange dynamic between the two Spider-People this June.

Spider-Man 2099 originally showed up in the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse end-credits scene. Oscar Isaac, who voiced the character in the first film, will have a larger role in the sequel.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will finally hit theaters on June 2, 2023.
