86: Eighty-Six Anime Episode 22 Recap
Since the show first started airing in spring 2021, many fans have wondered if Shin and Lena ever meet and if they end up together. Finally, episode 22 gave an answer of sorts. But first, it gave Shin a very hard time. After Morpho's explosion, Shin suffered horrific nightmares, from his near-death experience at the hands of his brother, to the deaths of his friends and allies.
Shin's mental health, especially his struggle to regain his will to live, was a major source of conflict in the last few episodes. In this one, his survivor's guilt causes terrible hallucinations about his fallen friends. When Shin manages to regain consciousness, he sees a Legion approaching, but he's saved by none other than Lena.
The two characters meet in a very emotional scene, during which Lena reveals the impact the soldiers from 86 had on her life, and how she feels compelled to keep fighting and symbolically carry the dead ones with hers and catch up with any survivors. Shin chooses not to reveal his identity as her words have moved him, and he doesn't want her to see him for the first time stranded as he is.
Before Shin can exit his mecha, he finally hears back from the Federacy forces, and finds out that his friends and Frederica all survived. Lena is escorted back to the Republic and the Federacy will begin looking for survivors.
Frederica points out that in meeting Lena, Shin has found a reason to live on. When his friends find out about the encounter, they express newfound respect for Lena and how far she's come. So, could the finale involve a proper meeting between them all? Stay tuned to find out!
86: Eighty-Six Anime Episode 23 Release Date
The scheduled release date for Episode 23 of the 86 anime, titled "Handler 1", is Sunday the 20th of March. Fans in Canada, the US, and Europe will be able to access it from March 19.
Judging from the title, the episode might give us a chance to finally catch up with Lena's arc after a while.
As per the usual drill, Episode 22 will air on Crunchyroll. Unless you have a premium account you'll have to wait at least one week longer for the newest episode, and there will be ads.
