86 episode 5is where the show takes a supernatural twist - or does it? Upon entering the dystopian story's TV tropes page, we're informed it's impossible to talk about later light novel volumes without spoilers from Volume 1, and the latest episode starts to show us why.
So far, the story has focused on Lena and her journey as she tried to understand the people of area 86 and learn how to help them. While episode 5 delves into her backstory, we also learn more about Shinnei. This was by far the most complex episode of 86 and we can't wait to find out more about the two protagonists - and why not see them meet?

86 Anime Overview and Episode 5Recap
In 86, Lena, an elite soldier, is assigned to be Handler of a secret unit within the Republic of San Magnolia: Eighty-Six, whose inhabitants are stripped of their citizenship and rights, and forced to fight in a war with the Gidian Empire, with a slim chance of survival.
The first cour is going to have 11 episodes, meaning we're already in the middle; and the story is really starting to pick up.
Warning: If you haven't watched 86 Episode 5, you might want to skip to the next section as there will be major spoilers below. If you have watched the episode though, the recap might help, given that it's the most complex one yet.
In 86 Episode 5, we get a glimpse into Lena's backstory. Her father, who also felt sympathetic towards the plight of 86, died in front of her during a Legion ambush. She was then helped by Shin's brother, Shourei. Lena tells Shin that his long-dead brother was kind to her, but their conversation is cut short as a Legion ambush about which she hadn't been informed, forces the 86 people into the battlefield.
Shin warns Lena to cut their connection, as "Black Sheep" will be coming. Lena refuses to hang up, only to hear voices of people in distress, including Kaie, who was brutally killed a couple of episodes ago. Lena hangs up in distress, and Shin's unit doesn't expect to hear from her again as this broke all previous Handlers. But Lena isn't just any Handler. Despite being traumatized, she calls back and is faced with unsettling truths.
When young, Shin had a near-death experience which causes him to always hear the voices of the dead and thus know when the Legions are nearby - this partly explains how he survived so long. But what exactly are the Black Sheep? Basically, they're advanced drones: to make them, the functions of a human brain were copied, making them extremely smart and hard to defeat.
But this is not all. The voices of the dead are heard because the Legions copy the brains of those they kill, imprinting their last thoughts into the programming, thus creating extremely advanced models who won't only be viable for two years, as initially suspected but might survive much longer and eventually defeat the Republic.
Hearing that the Republic will inevitably be defeated, Lena resolves to defeat the Shepherd models that control the Black Sheep within the year. Later, Shin talks to his brother, saying that "it" is finally starting, possibly meaning a long-awaited change. We also find out that Shin bears a scar on his throat, as Shourei tried to murder him.
86 Anime Episode 6Release Date
86 Episode 6, titled "Through to the End," is going to be released on Sunday, the 16th of May in Japan. This translates to the 15th of May in many other time zones, including those in Europe and the US/Canada.
The anime is currently being simulcast by Crunchyroll, so if you are a subscriber, you will be able to watch episodes as they come out. Otherwise, you will have to wait a few weeks.
