Wonder Woman’s Story is Philosophical But Grounded

When you have an Amazonian goddess and princess as the main hero of a superhero movie, there are so many ways that the movie's fantastical elements can go in so many different directions.

However, the way director Patty Jenkins is aiming to propel the story of Diana Prince a.k.a. Wonder Woman, it would be with the grounding of a real-life event. Speaking to Empire, the director advance her ideas on why they choice the World War I setting for her standalone movie:

"My approach was to focus on telling the story of mechanized war and how that would look to a god visiting our world for the first time. I wanted the audience to understand the horrors that a war on this scale makes possible and how shocking that would be to someone who comes with a strong sense of honor and justice. she doesn't realize yet just how senselessly dark the world can be."

Indeed, this ties in very nicely when it comes to Wonder Woman's ultimate approach to humanity. As Jenkins previously revealed, Wonder Woman embodies love and justice, a kind of innocence that matches a coming-of-age story that' supposed to be the core of Wonder Woman.

Given what she will be seeing once she goes headfirst into the war on Earth may be what shapes her vision of mankind. Because it won't be a coming-of-age story when there's no realization or change happens.

Perhaps she will see a less tan innocent or good side to humanity? Or will the presence of Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) be a way for her to still retain hope in humanity?

One thing's for sure, the new sneak peek image of Wonder Woman running through rubble and destruction shows our heroine looking fierce—but also angry.

Wonder Woman is one of DC's films that I'm still holding out a lot of hope for, together with Aquaman and The Flash. Here's hoping that she'll be the light of (renewed) love for DC films in 2017. Wonder Woman will be in theaters on June 2, 2017.
