Star Wars Visual Effects Supervisor Explains Deleted Scene

Last month, the novelization for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker revealed a horrifying creature called the Eye of Webbish Bog, a spider-like being that was tasked to guard the Sith wayfinder of Darth Vader on the planet of Mustafar. The terrifying monster was supposed to appear in Episode IX, but the scene ended up on the cutting room floor.

Speaking in an interview with Collider,Star Wars visual effects supervisor Neal Scanlan reveals why the scene with the Eye of Webbish Bog was deleted from The Rise of Skywalker. It turns out that the creature needed a lengthy explanation, and the film's limited time frame couldn't accommodate the Eye of the Webbish Bog.

"I think it maybe was too lengthy an explanation for something that [director J.J. Abrams] was able to explain in the movie much quicker," Scanlan told the entertainment news outlet.

Abrams meant for the scene to be part of the film. Scanlan's team constructed the creature and the film with the Eye of the Webbish Bog was filmed for The Rise of Skywalker. Unfortunately, Abrams found that the scene ate up too much time for the film.

"J.J.'s movies move very quickly, don't they? And it was all part of Kylo Ren's journey and I think he just felt that there was too much time being spent on something which he explained much quicker," the visual effects supervisor explained.

It's a shame that the scene never made it into the film. Abrams should have added the scene in The Rise of skywalker's home release. Let's hope that the character gets revisited one way or another.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is set for release on Digital HD on March 17, 2020 and on DVD, Blu-Ray, and 4K Ultra HD on March 31, 2020.
