Star Wars: Episode IX Won’t Make The Same Mistakes As The Force Awakens

Sure, there might be a lot of excitement building up over Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, but there have also been concerns that the third film in Lucasfilm's sequel trilogy might have the same defects as its predecessors. Some Star Wars fans aren't entirely sure that J.J. Abrams might able to deliver a good closing entry for the sequel trilogy – after all, the director's first Star Wars entry, The Force Awakens, has often been accused of being a rehash of A New Hope.

However, it seems like fans have very little to worry about. Earlier this month, Vanity Fair released a new issue focusing on Star Wars: Episode IX. Speaking in an interview with Abrams, the publication got to ask about the difference between the production of The Force Awakens and The Rise of Skywalker, wondering whether the process changed over time.

"Working on nine, I found myself approaching it slightly differently. Which is to say that, on seven, I felt beholden to Star Wars in a way that was interesting — I was doing what, to the best of my ability, I felt Star Wars should be," the director explained, "It felt slightly more renegade; it felt slightly more like, you know, f**k it, I'm going to do the thing that feels right because it does, not because it adheres to something."

It seems like Abrams is taking a few notes from Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Sure, the film might have an excessively vocal set of detractors against its subversive antics, however, The Last Jedi also took the franchise to new directions.

Let's see where The Rise of Skywalker takes us this December.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres December 20, 2019.
