Star Wars Creator George Lucas Felt Betrayed By Disney’s Plans For New Trilogy

Lucasfilm's sequel trilogy might be coming to an end when Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits cinemas later this December, however, it seems like George Lucas wasn't so keen on the new Star Wars trilogy after all.

Disney CEO Bob Iger just recently released The Ride of a Lifetime: Lessons Learned from 15 Years as CEO of the Walt Disney Company and in the book (via Digital Spy) the Disney big wig opens up about various details about major events in the company, including how discussions for Lucasfilm's Star Wars sequel trilogy grew about complicated with Lucas.

The Star Wars creator wasn't that excited when the Disney board decided to steer away from Lucas' original ideas about the direction of the trilogy – handing over creative control to Disney wasn't something that he could so easily do.

"At some point in the process, George told me that he had completed outlines for three new movies," Iger wrote in his memoir.

Lucas had sent the company copies of the outlines he made for the new trilogy, and though the Mickey Mouse House decided that they would buy the Star Wars creator's idea for a new set of films, they made it clear in their purchase agreement that they wouldn't be contractually obligated to stick to the plot lines that he had laid out for the trilogy.

"George immediately got upset as they began to describe the plot and it dawned on him that we weren't using one of the stories he submitted during the negotiations," Iger recalled.

"In the first meeting with him about the future of Star Wars, George felt betrayed, and while this whole process would never have been easy for him, we'd gotten off to an unnecessarily rocky start," the memoir went on.

Seems like Lucas really wanted Disney to stick with the story he had set for the sequel trilogy. We've heard about Lucas' outline before – how he wanted Rey (Daisy Ridley) to train with Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) in Star Wars: The Force Awakens instead of Star Wars: The Last Jedi and how he had always planned for Luke to become a jaded old hermit on a lonely planet. There have definitely been a few changes though, seeing how upset Lucas is with what the sequel trilogy has become.
