Patty Jenkins Teases Barbara Minerva’s Cheetah Transformation in Wonder Woman 1984

There might have been a whole lot of secrecy wrapped up behind Kristen Wiig's final transformation as Cheetah in Wonder Woman 1984, but it looks like Patty Jenkins has begun teasing the main instigator behind Barbara Minerva's transformation.

Speaking in an interview with Empire to talk about DC's Wonder Woman sequel for the publication's June issue (via Heroic Hollywood), Jenkins opens up about Barbara Minerva and what makes her turn bad in Wonder Woman 1984. There have been a lot of questions about Barbara's transformation – the first few trailers for the upcoming Wonder Woman movie show the character as one of Diana Prince's (Gal Gadot) friends.

Turns out, it's Barbara's inadequacy and low self-esteem that leads her down the path to becoming Cheetah.

"What makes Barbara turn into Cheetah is feeling like she's never been as good as someone like Diana," the director explained, "She reminds me of certain people I've known who have such low self-confidence, that they're always holding themselves back. Then once they start to embrace change, out comes this ugly resentment built up over all those years."

We wonder how that resentment is going to build up in Barbara. What might be the final push for Barbara to go against Diana? It's going to be exciting seeing Cheetah in action when Wonder Woman 1984 premieres later this year. The film was originally slated for a June 5 release, however, the spread of the novel coronavirus has forced Warner Brothers to delay the film's debut.

Wonder Woman 1984 is now set to release on August 14, 2020.
