Sonic the Hedgehog Movie Reportedly Casts Jim Carrey as Doctor Robotnik

It was weird enough when James Marsden was cast in Sonic the Hedgehog but that might have been toppled by recent reports that Jim Carrey will be in the movie. According to Deadline, the Ace Ventura and Kick-Ass 2 actor is in the final stages of signing on to the film and we could see him as Doctor Robotnik, who most video game fans know as Doctor Eggman.

Carrey is an unusual choice, to say the least. If this were a full-blown animated movie then his casting would be fine but the movie is a mixture of CGI and live-action like The Smurfs or Alvin and The Chipmunks, though hopefully, this will be of better quality than those examples.

Having the character go by Robotnik again is an interesting decision since no one has called him that for a long time. Most of the recent video games have called him by his Japanese name Eggman. The character went by Robotnik during the early Sonic games, as well as the two animated series' that came out in the 90's.

To be frank, there's a very good chance that this Sonic movie could be part of the many bad video game adaptations. Hoping for the best but a trailer will be needed to ease the minds of those who have no faith.

Sonic the Hedgehog comes out on November 15, 2019.
