It has already been confirmed that the Obi-Wan Kenobi series was originally meant to be a spin-off film that would focus on the Jedi Master. Interestingly, the writer for the new Disney+ show has just revealed that there was a director attached to the movie before the idea was repurposed into a different project.
Hossein Amini has been confirmed to pen the screenplay for the Obi-Wan series and it looks like he has been aware of the project from its early development. Amini recently spoke to Discussing Film where he confirmed that Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close director Stephen Daldry told him about the movie.
"I was initially contacted by the original director for the film version, Stephen Daldry and chatted with him and loved him as a director and then with Lucasfilm, it was more of a conversation than a pitch, I am incredibly gracious about it. They didn't make it feel like an audition," Amini said.
Daldry would have been an interesting choice to direct the Obi-Wan film considering that he has been nominated for Oscars for his work on Billy Elliot, The Hours, and The Reader. On the other hand, it looks like Disney and Lucasfilm have found a more ideal candidate to helm the series in Deborah Chow, who had previously worked on two episodes of The Mandalorian.
Ewan McGregor will return as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the upcoming Star Wars series. Although the show has not yet been given an official release date, it is expected to begin production in 2020.
