Marvel's Avengers Reveals Controversial Feature Days Before Release

Marvel's Avengers continues to stir up the controversy, just when things seemed to be getting better for the game. After fixing the character models and delivering an improved second beta, Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics may have shot themselves in the foot when they decided to announce Hero Challenge Cards, which are basically the controversial Battle Pass feature that is rampant in games like Fortnite, Apex Legends, and Call of Duty: Warzone but at least those games are free.

Square Enix decided to be transparent with customers about how cosmetics will work and we give them some credit for that. They explained that the base characters will have their Hero Challenge Cards activated from the get-go so earning cosmetics for Captain America, Iron Man, Ms. Marvel, Black Widow, Hulk, and Thor won't cost you a dime. It's also worth noting that all of the DLC heroes like Hawkeye and Spider-Man so fans won't have to worry about that either.

However, if you want to earn the best and coolest-looking cosmetics, you're gonna have to pay 1000 credits, which is about $10. Square Enix did state that you earn 12,500 credits by completing the other Hero Challenge Cards so, realistically, you can earn a ton of them by simply playing the ones already available in the base game. It's still bothersome but that just can't be helped.

There are probably some who will defend the move from Marvel's Avengers since new heroes and stories will remain free. Still, we can't help but be annoyed by having free-to-play mechanics as Battle Passes in a $60 game. We're kind of happy that they are honest about it but you can't blame anyone who might be regretting their pre-order.

Marvel's Avengers comes out on September 4 for the PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Google Stadia. PS4 and Xbox One owners will get a free PS5 and Xbox Series X upgrade of the game when these next-gen consoles come out.
