With a score of 8.60 upon conclusion, Vivy Fluorite Eye's Song became one of the most beloved original anime of the Spring 2021 Season. Visually stunning and action-packed, it resonated with a lot of viewers who were happy to follow the Singularity Project through to its end, this weekend. But what exactly happened? Below, we unpack the ending of Vivy Fluorite Eye's Song and explain key points. As always, beware of spoilers.
How Did Vivy Succeed This Time?
In Episode 12, Vivy failed to stop the AIs because she found herself still unable to sing. The reason for that was that she still did not trust herself to "pour her heart" into her singing. But when Osamu sacrificed himself to send her back to when the war just started, Vivy knew all the mistakes she and the others made in the original timeline.
When she woke in the museum once more, she was able to brief Matsumoto and the others on the situation, saving significant time and resources. This gave Vivy time to run back to NiaLand, the original amusement park where she used to perform. This was not a trivial choice; NiaLand is where Vivy initially tried to pour her heart into her songs and failed, resulting in an unenthusiastic audience. By returning to a place she deems an appropriate stage, she brings things full circle.
This time, Vivy is able to sing because she realises that her "feelings" are all tied to her 100-year journey, the people she met and the memories she still cherishes. While Navi, her old manager AI tries to talk her out of it, using a hologram of Momoka, Vivy goes on with her plan, as Navi's version of Momoka calls her "Diva," rather than "Vivy," showing she was merely an illusion.
Vivy is so determined to stop the war that she goes on to sing her best song yet, knowing that she's among the AIs that will shut down. This way, she completes her mission to make everyone happy with her singing. When all AIs tied to the Archive become incapacitated, humanity can start rebuilding itself. As for Matsumoto, he seemingly breaks trying to keep the meteorite from crashing into the earth.
What's Up With the Final Scene?
Vivy and Matsumoto shutting down felt appropriate if a little too predictable. The post-credit scene, basically tells viewers that the floor is theirs to make scenarios for the future of the pair. A reconstructed Matsumoto wakes up a now short-haired Vivy.
There's quite a lot to unpack here; Matsumoto calls her Vivy, rather than Diva, her initial, songstress personality. Vivy is the name Momoka gave her, and the one that came to be associated with the Singularity Project. However, Matsumoto also names her original mission, to make everyone happy with her singing.
This new Vivy doesn't seem to have any memories of the 100-year journey, and she smiles naively at the thought of the audience waiting for her. But why did Matsumoto still called her Vivy? Could it be that she's going to regain her memories? What we can assume, is that the Apocalypse was successfully prevented, since Matsumoto, the one responsible for Vivy straying from her original mission, her singing career, is the one now endorsing it.
Moreover, fans have noticed that the repaired Vivy's clothes are much more vintage compared to her futuristic Diva outfit when last she was at the museum. This possibly suggests that technological advancements in the new timeline Vivy created happened more slowly and organically, and humanity is now ready to coexist with AIs – meaning the Singularity Project was a success.
From there on, it's up to us to decide what is going to happen next. It would be nice to think that Vivy will get a chance to be happy and have more lighthearted adventures with Matsumoto as her manager. Some might even believe this is material for Season 2 – though I don't think it would.
