George Lucas Was Disappointed There Was Nothing New In The Force Awakens

We already know George Lucas created the beloved Star Wars franchise. Although Lucas had a rough start in making these movies, his hard work led him to success when he made a surprise hit with the Star Wars trilogy that fans have come to love through the years.

Back in 2012, Lucas made a huge leap when he decided to sell Lucasfilms to Disney. Of course, along with this deal is the Star Wars franchise; leaving it to Disney to make the most out of it.

Lucas was always caught up in reports about him being underwhelmed with Star Wars: The Force Awakens. He criticized the films but eventually apologized regarding his statement. With Disney's CEO Bob Iger's newly released book, he touched on the matter as he looks back fifteen years from now.

Iger published his book titled The Ride of a Lifetime: Lessons Learned From 15 Years As CEO Of The Walt Disney Company. He mentioned how it was difficult in his starting years. Revealing that Lucas was hesitant to let go of Star Wars and that he regrets not developing his own ideas for the sequel trilogy.

The release of The Force Awakens adds to his disappointment because he thought "there's nothing new" with the movie. The first time seeing the film, Lucas thought that "there weren't enough visual or technical leaps forward," especially with his priorities on presenting new stuff in every film released.

With that said, Iger agrees with the filmmaker's point. However, he tried to make the movies to persuade the fans to still support the franchise. Iger thinks it was important to make the movie as a "bridge between the Lucas and the Disney areas," Screen Rant reports. "George was criticizing us for the very thing we were trying to do," Iger says.

Although, it seems that through the years, Lucas is "comfortable" with how things are going with Disney. Reports say that he enjoyed Rogue One and he praised the film The Last Jedi. Of course, Lucas expects a lot with the upcoming movie The Rise of Skywalker since it will serve as a definitive conclusion for the trilogy.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres on December 20, 2019.
