James Gunn's The Suicide Squad Officially Lands an R-Rating Due to Nudity and Gore

James Gunn's project in the DC Extended Universe with The Suicide Squad has been gaining traction over the past few months. The recent red band trailer proves that the movie will not be holding back when it comes to exploding guts and blood.

Now, the film has officially landed an R-rating. The Collider reported that the MPAA rated The Suicide Squad for "strong violence and gore, language throughout, some sexual references, drug use, and brief graphic nudity." The film's R-rating is not Gunn's first project to have landed this rating. The first two Guardians of the Galaxy were rated PG-13 but his writer and directorial debut on Slither (2006) was rated R as a horror/comedy film.

Gunn's second film titled Super, which was released in 2010 received a similar R-rating. It was comically bleak but it still has its own take for some costumed crime fighters.

The R-rating for The Suicide Squad is not entirely a surprise as Gunn already confirmed that the film was designed to be an R-rating. There was even a red band trailer offering glimpses of the movie's graphic gore. It included a scene of King Shark (Sylvester Stallone) ripping a person in half with just bare hands.

There were also multiple f-bombs from Bloodsport (Idris Elba). Meanwhile, Peacemaker (John Cena) lewdly explains the extreme lengths he is willing to go to protect and preserve liberty.

James Gunn's The Suicide Squad is the latest DC property released by Warner Brothers that is rated R. The film is set to be released on August 6, 2021.
