Developers of the Viral Game Among Us Said They Were Burned Out After the Game Became Popular

Among Us didn't start as a huge name in 2018. It wasn't a failure but it wasn't exactly a household name. In the summer of 2020, it suddenly became viral after some popular Twitch streamers started playing it which then spread to other streamers. All of a sudden, the eyes of the people were set on the game.

Due to its virality, people started noticing the game's three-person development team. The developers revealed that despite the game being popular, it was not easy. Innersloth expanded slowly but the team members still suffered from burnout due to the huge expectations that were given to them.

Amy Liu was Innersloth's artist who also did a lot of things for the team. Liu talked with YouTuber Anthony Padilla, where she shared that after the game went viral, she said, "OK, this is my life." At that point, the pressure to do things quickly became really high. From September to December 2021, they were talking to PlayStation and Xbox. The companies were trying to get Among Us on their platforms. The process usually takes many months or even up to a year. However, they said, "Three months! We're gonna try that."

The massive expectation to Liu and the team also came during the worst peak of the global pandemic. Liu revealed that was definitely burned out. It was truly tough for her through all those times as they were not able to see their friends and family. She added that she was so tired from working, cannot visit family, and spent holidays alone. Despite the massive success of their game, it was one of the hardest times the team faced.

Innersloth's artist and game designer Marcus Bromander stated that the success also brought criticism. Not only did the success bring constructive criticisms, but there were also multiple demands from the people who played the game. However, the team has started to rise above the challenges and has expanded its team to accommodate more of the responsibilities they have to face.

Among Us are available on Android, iOs, Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
