Dragon Ball Super Voice Actor Sean Schemmel Talks About The Show's Influence in America

There will be a big panel for Dragon Ball Super at this year's San Diego Comic-Con and the anime franchise will also kick off its official North American tour. Dragon Ball's popularity in the U.S. is clear, and now, Sean Schemmel, the voice actor of Goku in the anime's English dub, talked about the show's influence in America.

Speaking to Comicbook.com, Schemmel said that Dragon Ball Super's growing influence in America is all thanks to the interconnectivity of cultures between both regions. "We're all affected by each other's art...Japan is consuming American culture. We're consuming Japanese culture. We're all consuming different cultures. No artist is an island, I don't believe."

Schemmel thinks the interconnectivity between America and Japan influenced Toei Animation's production style. "I noticed that the pacing and the story boarding and things are much quicker, and I don't want to say it's more American style because I don't know that we invented that but it definitely matches more with the pacing of 2018 cartoons and American cartoons and the story boarding's real similar."

Schemmel also added how it shaped Dragon Ball Super's style. "There's less powering up for two weeks and more story, more dialogue, more comedy, better quality animation, better frame rates."

Dragon Ball Super is available for streaming on Crunchyroll Saturdays at 7:15 p.m. CST. Toonami still airs the English dub of Dragon Ball Super on Adult Swim Saturdays at 9:30 p.m. It's also available to stream on FunimationNOW and Amazon. The upcoming Dragon Ball Super film will be released on December 14.
