Death Note Characters Won't Be Playable in Jump Force

When the upcoming anime mash-up fighting game Jump Force was announced at E3 2018, the teaser revealed that Light Yagami and Ryuk from the Death Note franchise is a part of it but fans wondered how they could possibly fight fairly against other characters in the game. However, they won't be playable in Jump Force because they'd be "too strong."

During an interview with Bahamut (via Siliconera), producer Koji Nakajima confirmed that Ryuk won't be a playable character. "Ryuk from Death Note isn't a playable character," Nakajima said. "because if he writes names into the Death Note, people die, right? He'd be too strong."

According to Nakajima, the Death Note characters will be involved in how the anime worlds and the real world will collide.

"The background of the story is that the real world and Jump's world is merging together for unknown reasons, and the heroes need to stop this from happening. The Death Note characters have to do with this background, which also means they will show up in the story," Nakajima explained.

Nakajima also said that sports manga characters won't be part of the story since New York is not suited for them.

"This story is set in New York, so adding in sports manga characters is a bit difficult… it's mainly battle manga characters. I can guarantee there will be characters that will surprise everyone."

Jump Force is set to release for the Playstation 4, Xbox One, and PC in 2019.
