The Crown will be back for another season but fans may have to wait longer for its premiere date. However, the upcoming season is already in development.
For those who have been waiting for fresh updates about The Crown Season 5, here are the things that you need to know.
The Crown Season 5 is already in production
The cast of the upcoming season has begun filming in London in July 2021, Variety reported. Peter Morgan also mentioned at the Emmy Awards this month that they would be shooting again "in a couple of hours" after the ceremony which confirmed that the production is underway.
Earlier this month, Netflix revealed the first look of Prince Charles (Dominic West) and Princess Diana's (Elizabeth Debicki) children Prince William and Prince Harry in the series. In the photos obtained by People, the royal couple is all smiles with their boys in tow.
The picture is a striking shift from the Prince and Princess of Wales fractured relationship at the end of Season 4.
Who will return and join the cast in The Crown Season 5
Debicki, 31, is taking over Emma Corrin as Princess Diana in Season 5. Meanwhile, West, 51, will be playing the role of Prince Charles. Josh O'Connor portrayed the heir apparent's character in Season 3 and Season 4.
"It's a dream role. She is such a remarkable human being and she really does still live in the hearts of so many people," Debicki told Mirror about her role as Princess Diana in the series. "I'm overwhelmed, I'm terrified and I'm excited. I can't wait to start."
Also joining the fifth season are Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II, Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip, and Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret.
"I'm absolutely thrilled to confirm Imelda Staunton as Her Majesty The Queen," The Crown's creator Peter Morgan told Deadline about Staunton's casting. "Imelda is an astonishing talent and will be a fantastic successor to Claire Foy and Olivia Colman."
Khalid Abdalla, 39, will also be joining the cast to play Princess Diana's boyfriend, Dodi Fayed. The couple was both killed during the vehicle accident in 1997.
What to expect in The Crown Season 5?
Prince Charles and Princess Diana's rocky marriage was highlighted in the last season. Season 5 will likely continue to show the royal couple's troubled relationship which will eventually lead to their split and divorce.
The Prince and Princess of Wales decided to call it quits in 1992. However, their divorce was only finalized in 1996. In 1997, Princess Diana died in a car crash in Paris.
The previous season ended in 1999 and season 5 will certainly cover the early 90s. Prince William and Kate Middleton's courtship and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding might not be covered in the show anymore.
"At the outset I had imagined The Crown running for six seasons, but now that we have begun work on the stories for season 5 it has become clear to me that this is the perfect time and place to stop," series creator Peter Morgan said. "I'm grateful to Netflix and Sony for supporting me in this decision."
The decision was reversed in July with Morgan saying they will return for Season 6. However, he made it clear that even if they are doing Season 6, it will not bring the storyline closer to the present day. So, the Cambridges and Sussexes' stories are unlikely to be featured.
"To be clear, Series 6 will not bring us any closer to present-day—it will simply enable us to cover the same period in greater detail."
The Crown Season 5 Release Date
There is no official release date for The Crown Season 5 yet. However, according to Deadline, it won't premiere until 2022.
