Canadian director Denis Villeneuve doesn't seem impressed with the movies produced by the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

During a recent interview with El Mundo, Denis Villeneuve was asked to weigh in on the future of Hollywood blockbusters. The director of Arrival and Blade Runner 2049 said that he's not pessimistic about the future of Hollywood blockbusters, but he's not also impressed with the movies from the MCU franchise.

"Perhaps the problem is that we are in front of too many Marvel movies that are nothing more than a 'cut and paste' of others. Perhaps these types of movies have turned us into zombies a bit… But big and expensive movies of great value there are many today. I don't feel capable of being pessimistic at all," he said.

Denis Villeneuve impressed with directors outside Marvel Cinematic Universe

On the contrary, the Canadian director has nothing but wonderful things to say about his fellow directors, Christopher Nolan and Alfonso Cuarón.

Nolan and Cuarón are reportedly able to continue the tradition of directing big-budget projects that are also artistically robust.

"Just think of the golden age of Hollywood to see that commercial films can make a different artistic proposal and, therefore, political. I have never felt like a loss or an impediment to having a generous budget to do what I wanted to do. Upside down," he added.

The Canadian director likened MCU to a factory

Earlier this year, Villeneuve also criticized the MCU and said that the franchise uses a mold in creating movies pretty much like what a factory does.

"If we're talking about Marvel, the thing is, all these films are made from the same mold. Some filmmakers can add a little color to it, but they're all cast in the same factory. It doesn't take anything away from the movies, but they are formatted," he told Premier.

Marvel Cinematic Universe is the biggest franchise in the US

Despite his criticisms, MCU still remains to be the biggest movie franchise in the United States. Lagging closely behind it is the Star Wars, Harry Potter, Fast & Furious, Jurassic Park, and James Bond franchises.

The top five highest-grossing superhero films, as well as eight out of the 10 highest-grossing films, are produced by Marvel Studios, which is within the MCU. And the most successful Marvel Studios movie to date is the Avengers: End Game.

Avengers: End Game is the highest-grossing MCU movie

In the Avengers: End Game, the Avengers reunite to try and defeat Thanos. In doing so, Tony Stark aka Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) used so much of his strength in defeating the villain that he passes away.

However, Iron Man's story didn't necessarily end in Avengers: End Game. He is featured in the hit Disney Plus animated series, Marvel's What If…?

Iron Man fans enraged after he's killed off in Marvel's What If...?

Marvel's What If…? is a reimagining of some of the biggest events in the MCU. Unfortunately, Iron Man was also killed off in the series. And this happened multiple times on the show.

The tragic fate of Iron Man resulted in his fans urging the people behind the show to put an end to what they are doing.

On Twitter, @michaelp93 said that Marvel's What If…? should be retitled as, How Many Times Can Marvel Studios Kill Off The Already-Dead Tony Stark In A Nine-Episode Series?

Twitter user @lucixwllis said that Marvel brought Iron Man back to life in What If…? only to kill him off again.

Mary Sue also said that they are hoping to see at least one episode that will focus on Iron Man's life had he not been killed.

What If… We Don't Kill Tony Stark This Time? should be the title of the MCU installment.

Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has yet to respond to Denis Villeneuve's comments or the comments of fans regarding Iron Man's fate in Marvel's What If...?
