Scarlett Johansson is one of the longest-tenured female actors in the Marvel Cinematic Universe but her journey as Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow came to an end after her heroic sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame. Now, Johansson is getting his blow-off moment in the form of her solo Black Widow film which will follow the journey of Nat pre-Avengers and her early life as part of the Red Room training program.
A lot of fans are actually hoping that her character will be brought back to life in the MCU but according to director Cate Shortland, Black Widow will possibly be Johansson's last appearance as Natasha Romanoff in the Marvel film franchise. In a recent interview with The Gentlewoman, she explains that the actress doesn't want to go out of the MCU in a feel-good fashion.
Shortland explains: "She really pushed to make something that wasn't flimsy or superficial. She wanted to make something that meant a lot to young people and to women. And she knew it was possibly her last film as Black Widow – she didn't want to leave Marvel making a feel-good movie."
Personally, as much as I'm down to seeing her back in the franchise, I can't deny the fact that it will only cheapen the sacrifice her character made in Avengers: Endgame. The same can be said about Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man if he ends up coming back from the dead so yeah, let's just keep things the way they are. And Johansson pretty much devoted 10 years of her life to the franchise, it's time we give her the break she definitely deserves.
Black Widow's theatrical release has once again been pushed back to July 9, 2021. The film will also be available for streaming on Disney+ via Premier Access with extra fees.
