Very few manga properties manage to make their mark, and Jump Comics' Yu Yu Hakusho by Yoshihiro Togashi was probably one of the biggest shonen anime to come out in the 90s. What's interesting is, it looks like Netflix is interested in adapting the story of Yusuke Urameshi.
As announced on Twitter, Netflix is going to be adapting Yu Yu Hakusho into a live-action series:
It still isn't clear if the main language of the series is going to be in English or Japanese, but with other announced adaptations like Cowboy Bebop and One Piece expected to be in the English language, it would make sense for Netflix to do the same with something like Yu Yu Hakusho. Until we get some official details, I guess all we can really do as fans is to guess.
Here's the series synopsis:
One day, 14-year-old Yusuke Urameshi suddenly finds himself dead, having died pushing a child out of the way of oncoming traffic. Since he has such a bad personality, even the Spirit World was caught by surprise that he would sacrifice himself. Yusuke soon finds out he wasn't supposed to die and has a chance for resurrection and bringing his body back to life. After being resurrected, Yusuke becomes a Spirit Detective, along with his comrades, and one adventure after another happens, whether it be an investigation or a fighting tournament.
Admittedly, Netflix has made a meme out of itself after the bomb that was the adaptation of Death Note. While it would have been easy to get past the cast being American this time around, the series kind of just forgot what made the original story interesting—the high stakes cat and mouse game between Light and L trying to outsmart each other.
It's probably too early to be excited for Yu Yu Hakusho right now, but people have their fingers crossed that Netflix will eventually find a way to get their anime adaptations done right. Hopefully, they don't have to sacrifice too many properties before they get that done.
No release date has been set for Netflix's Yu Yu Hakusho, but I'm speculating a possible 2022 release.
