Labyrinth Sequel Apparently Moving Forward, Script has been Finished

Jim Henson's 1986 film Labyrinth may be kooky by today's standards, but the movie has managed to gain cult status over the years and has cemented David Bowie as one of the most beloved performers in history. A sequel is in the works for the movie, and we get a small update on its development.

Taking to Fandango, director Fede Alvarez said:

"I was actually having lunch yesterday with [Jim Henson's daughter] Lisa Henson and we reconnected with that project. We're very excited about it. It is basically a direct continuation of the first movie many years later, and I can't tell you much more about it... but we have a script, and we're very excited about it so we'll see where that goes. Like always, it takes time and effort to put those movies together because they're larger than life. But that's one of the projects that I'm very excited about."

Alvarez has been attached to direct the project since last year, but admittedly updates have been scarce. With the film being a direct continuation of the first, I'm expecting they either recast the characters of Jennifer Connelly and David Bowie; either that or they go the reboot/sequel direction with a focus on a new cast of characters with Connelly reprising her role as an older Sarah Williams.

Though the movie ends up kind of corny by today's standards, Labyrinth manages to impress with it's amazing world and playful visual effects. Though Jim Henson is known best for his work on The Muppets and Sesame Street, films like Labyrinth and Dark Crystal show just how far he can push for world-building fantasy.

We don't have a release date for the Labyrinth sequel yet, but Netflix's Dark Crystal prequel is said to be coming sometime next year.
