Andy Serkis’s Snoke In Star Wars: The Last Jedi Is Entirely CGI

While there's been a lot of speculation that Star Wars fans are finally going to get to see Supreme Leader Snoke's true form in The Last Jedi, new reports reveal that the First Order leader will be purely CGI once he appears in The Force Awakens sequel.

Entertainment Weekly just recently dropped a batch of new photos from The Last Jedi and in the publication's cover story, director Rian Johnson offers more information about the film, including the process of creating Supreme Leader Snoke.

Though fans have been hoping for a closer look at Snoke after The Force Awakens presented the Force-sensitive humanoid as a towering hologram, Johnson says that the team opted against using prosthetics and practical effects in bringing the character to the big screen, revealing that Snoke would be made purely out of CGI.

"No, it's entirely a mo-cap performance. [Creature designer] Neal Scanlan built a maquette that we had on set for lighting reference and to give the actors a sense of what it was going to feel like. And then we scanned that and [Industrial Light & Magic] used that in their renderings, but Snoke will be an entirely CG creation."

However' this doesn't mean that fans should expect less of Andy Serkis' performance as Snoke. Johnson's pretty excited to see the Star Wars sequel trilogy villain make his way back to the big screen and everyone's hoping to learn more about the wrinkled First Order leader. Let's see where Johnson takes us when The Last Jedi hits cinemas later this year.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi premieres December 15, 2017.
