Zazie Beetz: Joker Movie was Rewritten During Production

20th Century Fox

DC fans may be expecting the drop of Shazam! this April, but October will bring us their first DCEU spinoff in the form of the Joker movie. Zazie Beetz (Deadpool) is a part of the film and she reveals that there were actually a bunch of rewrites that took place mid-production.

She tells MTV News:

"I haven't seen a cut or anything. Script is great. We rewrote the whole thing while we were shooting it. Literally we would go into [director Todd Phillips'] trailer and write the scene for the night then do it."

As it turns out, the production also had to get everything done fast because Joaquin Phoenix had started to lose weight (possibly for another role). Luckily Phillips was already a very experienced director and managed to find a way to make things work.

While script rewrites are a very common thing with films, I'm curious what had to be done with Joker. The notion of the spinoff was already very odd when you look at the state of the DCEU, but the script was possibly great enough to win the green light from WB. Hopefully, these changes are more pro to the film rather than a con.

We don't have many details on Beetz's character yet, but everyone speculates that she's going to be Arthur Fleck/Joker's love interest. If you've read The Killing Joke, you'll know that the Joker's wife meets a tragic end, and seeing the nature of the film, I'm guessing the same fate could be set for Beetz's character.

Joker hits theaters Oct. 4.
