Zachary Levi's Shazam is set to make his DCEU return in just a couple of months in the upcoming sequel Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Ever since he was introduced in 2019, he became a beloved character and fans are wondering what they have in store for the follow-up as well as the future of the franchise overall now that it's a new regime under James Gunn and Peter Safran.
In his recent appearance at Comic Con Portugal 2022 (via Twitter user @Leo_Rafael99), Levi addressed his future in the new DCU franchise with Gunn and Safran at the helm where he expressed his hopes that he will remain involved in their plans and is counting on his friendship with the DC Studios heads.
"I’m sure most of you know who James Gunn is, because he’s made all kinds of incredible movies and television shows, like Guardians of the Galaxy, The Suicide Squad and stuff. So he’s one of my bosses now, which is dope. Also, he’s a friend of mine, so that makes him even cooler," the actor said.
"And then, Peter Safran, who is his partner, is my producer - he produces the movie Shazam! So your question is, 'If those are my two bosses, is there a plan and a future for Shazam?' I would say 'Yeah, I would hope so. I would hope so.' Because those are my friends, and if they don’t have a plan, then they are not my friends anymore. No, sir."
Based on his comments, it sounds like Levi has no idea yet about his future in the DCU just like the public and he is also anxiously waiting whether he will remain in the role under the new franchise that the duo is currently mapping out.
Considering the success of the first film and potentially the sequel soon, there is a likelihood that Levi will stay as Shazam in the franchise unless they'll do a complete reboot, which is also being speculated at this point. For now, let's wait for any official updates from Gunn which we should hear more about soon.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods is slated for release in theaters on March 17, 2023. You can check more details about it here.
