As we're now approaching the release of Shazam! Fury of the Gods, there have been questions about the future of Zachary Levi's Shazam in the DCU franchise. So far, DC Studios remained coy about the actor's next venture although they did indicate that they are open to bringing him back to play the hero again.
Speaking recently with Entertainment Tonight, Levi offered his take regarding the ambiguous nature of his DCU future and whether he will actually return to the role of Shazam as the new DC Studios is currently working on their first slate in the next couple of years.
"Listen, I've talked to Peter [Safran] a good bit, we're gonna talk more on this tour. Certainly, the idea is to continue the character, this world. It's a really enjoyable extension of the DCU. It has DNA that a lot of the other characters and extensions don't necessarily have because we are a more family [movie]," he said.
"[That] kind of franchise comes with a lot of fun. It's a throwback to... stuff like Goonies and Indiana Jones and all those things that evoke that kind of adventure in you."
The actor also added that "the idea is to keep" the Shazam! series going and there is "a better shot of making more in the future" if the audience shows up to support the upcoming sequel and the film receives another strong performance at the box office.
In this latest response from the actor, it sounds like his fate in the new franchise is still vague and uncertain as of this moment and this is something that fans will continue to discuss in the next couple of months as we're still learning about the plans for the franchise.
At the end of the day, as Levi also stated, it will also depend on the results. If the box office surpasses the first film and receives positive reception, the possibility of doing a third film and bringing back Levi will be a strong one. For now, let's just wait and see what the future will unfold.
