In the spirit world, there lives a father-son duo, which some people mistake for one person. They are the Great King Enma and his son, King Enma Jr., also known as Koenma. While Koenma debuted in Episode 1, does Enma appear in the Yu Yu Hakusho live action series?
To refresh your memory, Koenma is Botan and Yusuke’s boss. He is the co-ruler of the spirit world who made Yusuke a spirit detective.
He also has a pacifier in his mouth, which holds all of his spirit energy. They are two completely different characters, so don’t be confused.

Who Is Enma in Yu Yu Hakusho?
The Great King Enma is the co-ruler of the Spirit World, in addition to his son, Koenma. Similar to Koenma, he also judges the fate of the recently deceased, whether they will go to heaven or hell.
If you’re familiar with Dragon Ball’s King Yemma, you will notice how the two of them resemble each other. It’s because they are based on the same Hindu deity called Yama, known for being the lord and judge of the dead.
Unlike Koenma, who’s busy all the time, the Great King Enma watches over his son’s responsibilities. He knows whenever Koenma messes things up or when something goes wrong.
He usually scolds Koenma for his negligence and incompetence by spanking him a hundred times.
On the contrary, the Great King Enma is similar to Koenma in that they are both short-tempered, strict, and aggressive.
In the anime, Koenma is very scared of his father. He fears Enma in the belief that his father will send him somewhere far and dangerous, especially after the three artifacts of darkness were stolen by Kurama, Hiei, and Gouki.
Is Enma Good or Evil in Yu Yu Hakusho?
In the beginning, Enma is harmless to Yusuke and the others. He was only a threat to Koenma, who was afraid of being spanked 100 times.
Later on in the Chapter Black Saga, Enma orders Yusuke’s death to maintain the balance in the Human World, Spirit World, and Demon World.
In the Yu Yu Hakusho manga, Koenma even overthrows Enma from his position after learning about his corrupt ways. He was a selfish ruler who wanted to preserve and protect the demons at all costs.
He was even willing to manipulate demons to go into the human world and cause trouble.
Does Enma Appear in the Yu Yu Hakusho Live Action?
No, the Great King Enma doesn’t appear in the Yu Yu Hakusho live action. It was only Koenma who made an appearance in the series. His son debuted in Episode 1, where he met with Yusuke Urameshi for the first time.
Unlike the first episode of the Yu Yu Hakusho anime, the live action did not use Koenma’s baby form during Yusuke’s first visit.
Still, Koenma has a very funny side to him, as shown through his interactions with Botan and Yusuke while practicing the latter’s spirit gun.
Will Enma Appear in Future Episodes of the Yu Yu Hakusho Live Action?
As of writing, it hasn’t been confirmed if the Yu Yu Hakusho live action will be renewed in the future, making it difficult to determine whether King Enma will appear in future episodes.
If the Chapter Black Saga gets adapted, it’s possible that the Great King Enma will make an appearance, as he is hugely involved in the events of the said arc.
