Yellowstone Season 5 Episode 5 saw Beth Dutton in a fight, which isn’t new to her, really. What's new is how this week's confrontation relates to how the program has portrayed Beth and the other women this season.

In Episode 5, Beth's rage and hostility toward Summer Higgins (Piper Perabo) erupted. It also caused a lot of eye-rolling from many viewers because the series seemed to be getting tired of Beth and, out of ideas, is attempting to significantly transform the character.

Beth is a Giant Mess in Yellowstone Season 5

Beth is currently being transformed from a fiery, vengeful angel to a bewildered, emotional mess.

Summer criticized Yellowstone for everything it stood for, but as important, she drew John Dutton's (Kevin Costner), the patriarch of Yellowstone, attention. This greatly infuriated Beth. It was only a matter of time before the two got into a physical altercation because Summer was currently under house arrest in the main house.

Kelly Reilly Previously Hinted About Beth’s Plans For Summer

In an interview with TV Line, actress Kelly Reilly made this suggestion that Beth would pursue Summer in Yellowstone Season 5. Indicating that she sees the protester as a threat to her father, their family, and their way of life on the ranch, the actor said that Summer would be the target of Beth's fury.

"She just has no respect for this particular woman,” the actress shared. “She sees Summer as an enemy, someone who has absolutely no respect for their way of life. [She and her fellow protesters] just come in with this very basic understanding, thinking that [ranchers] all just rednecks."

Reilly added: "Beth isn’t going to walk her through it. She’s just going to quietly destroy her.”

Cruelest of All Duttons

Over the course of Yellowstone's four seasons, Beth has evolved into the cruelest of John's children, using her emotions as fuel to exact revenge on those who have mistreated her, including her husband Rip (Cole Hauser) and her father. The number of targets in her sights has slowly increased during the show, with Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley) now included.

According to Reilly, Beth regards Summer as a threat to the integrity of her family because Summer has committed her life to battle against people like Beth and her father. Beth sees John's romantic involvement with Summer as something that will harm the Dutton family and Yellowstone ranch in the long run, not something that will make her father happy.

Given that Reilly said Beth would keep pursuing Summer, it is likely that Beth will either take any necessary steps to impede Summer's appeals process or that Summer will be freed at some point throughout the season, in which case Beth will be waiting for her and hatching plans to bring her back.
