Dutton has faced death several times in Yellowstone, including a cancer scare, an assassination attempt, and numerous near-death experiences. However, despite the odds being stacked against him, Dutton has come through each time, leading fans to wonder how much longer he can live at this rate.
With events increasing to new heights from season to season, it's become a source of contention, with rumors circulating that Dutton will end his storyline in Yellowstone Season 5.
Kevin Costner Responds to John Dutton Death Rumors in Yellowstone Season 5
When asked about the speculations that Dutton will pass away in Yellowstone Season 5, Costner replied, "Well, I don't want to die," before going on to clarify that it's possible that Dutton is simply too occupied to prepare for death.
Costner added of the challenges Dutton would face in the upcoming season: "There's just too much to do, but in terms of this story I don't know where that's going to go."
In the end, the actor affirms that what matters more is Dutton's journey by saying that he hasn't given much thought to Dutton's ultimate death.

The patriarch of the Yellowstone cattle ranch, played by Costner's Dutton, is engaged in a bloody war with his family to protect their property from outside forces who attack them from all sides in the TV show.
Dutton finished off Yellowstone Season 4 by running for Governor of Montana, which will undoubtedly be expanded upon in the new season. This will likely present a whole new set of challenges for Dutton to deal with, which will keep Costner preoccupied for Yellowstone Season 5, which is scheduled to be the series' greatest season yet, even being split into two parts.
Dutton's flashback self, played by actor Josh Lucas, will also return to Yellowstone Season 5, fueling rumors that Dutton will die this season, though none of those claims has been confirmed.

What to Expect in Yellowstone Season 5
It's difficult to avoid making predictions about Dutton's future, given how frequently he has previously been in danger on Yellowstone. Although Costner doesn't offer a convincing response, his viewpoint is sound in that what Dutton is accomplishing while he is living is far more significant than his passing.
Yellowstone's unfolding narrative still has a lot of unfinished business that has to be resolved; otherwise, it wouldn't be nearly as rewarding or dramatic. Given where the story is at this point, it would seem premature to put Dutton out for good.
