It has already been confirmed that the new Candyman film is a remake of the 1992 film although Tony Todd is set to reprise his role as the titular villain. But is it possible that the upcoming movie might actually be something of a sequel to the original horror flick? There are speculations that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II's character could be connected to the first Candyman himself.
In the first trailer for the Candyman reboot, we are introduced to Anthony (Abdul-Mateen), a man who becomes interested in a housing project known as Cabrini-Green (which happens to be the same location where the original film took place). Early on, Anthony feels drawn to the place and is even told that he looks like a Candyman. Could this be because he was one of the villain's supposed victims from the first movie?
If you've seen the original movie, the baby that was supposed to be sacrificed to the Candyman was also named Anthony. Luckily, Helen (Virginia Madsen) was able to save the child although it meant her own death (and eventual resurrection as the new Candyman). So is it possible that Baby Anthony found a new family and grew up to become drawn to the place that was originally his first home? Perhaps we'll find out later this year.
Candyman is directed by Nia DaCosta and also stars Teyonah Parris, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, and Colman Domingo. The movie is scheduled for release on June 12.
