X-Men Writer Comments on Avengers: Endgame’s Time Travel

Time travel was an essential part of Avengers: Endgame and while the film doesn't really go into detail about the science behind the time travel machine, a few physicists have confirmed that the act of time travel itself is theoretically possible in the world of physics.

Of course, Endgame isn't the only comic book move to make use of time travel. 21^st Century Fox's X-Men: Days of Future past had its cast head on its own time-travel adventure when the film released back in 2014.

Speaking in an interview with IGN on the WFH Theater Commentary, Days of Future Past screenwriter Simon Kinberg shares his thoughts about the use of time travel in Endgame. Comparing time travel in both films, Kinberg says that Endgame has a more playful tone about it when compared with Days of the Future Past.

"I think the MCU's tone in general, with few exceptions, is a little bit more playful than the X-Men movies," Kinberg said. "What we did with the X-Men movies was try to create something that was a little more, I guess I would almost call it 'operatic' or 'dramatic,' even bordering on 'melodramatic.'"

Kinberg continues putting emphasis on the levity in Marvel movies.

"Whereas the MCU movies are largely more fun and poppy and playful, not that they don't have their serious moments too and obviously Endgame has some very serious moments, but the way they handled time travel feels to me in line with the general tonality of their movies. Whereas I think for us this fit more with the tone of what we do," the screenwriter says.

Levity has always been an important part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sure, Endgame may have had its moments of depth and seriousness, however, we do have to admit that there were a lot of lighthearted moments in the film, especially during the actual Infinity Stone heist.
