Batman remains one of the hottest commodities in the world of comic book films but if we're being honest, the last decade hasn't been the most successful for the Dark Knight. Thankfully, Matt Reeves was able to reignite the DC fandom's affinity for the character with his unconventional take on the character.

Of course, huge credit also goes to Robert Pattinson who nailed the role and proved the naysayers wrong. However, as most of you may know, the star of the Twilight franchise wasn't the only choice Warner Bros. had when Ben Affleck decided to abandon the project in early 2019.

Now, one of the actors who initially vied for the dual role of Bruce Wayne and Batman is finally addressing the long-standing rumors surrounding their failed attempt at securing the part.

In an interview with The Guardian, X-Men and Renfield actor Nicholas Hoult finally confirmed that he was indeed in the running to play the caped crusader and even went as far as screen testing for the role.

Unfortunately, he lost the bet to Robert Pattinson whose casting initially garnered nuclear heat from the fandom and it wasn't until the film came out that he won his biggest critics over.

When asked about his failed The Batman audition, Hoult simply said: "I screen-tested for Batman and didn't get it."

Hoult may have lost the bet but that's not to say that the doors have closed on him. Given his experience in the comic book film genre, he'd easily be an awesome grab for DC Studios now that they're set for a massive franchise reboot.

On the Marvel side of things, Hoult might still have a chance to reprise his role as Beast given how Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman are now crossing over to their cinematic universe.

The Batman - Part II is currently in the works with production reportedly set to begin this year.
