X-Men: Dark Phoenix Could Feature The Death Of Unexpected Character

The first trailer for Dark Phoenix certainly confirmed the end for one particular character. But which mutant will be killed off in the upcoming X-Men film? There are speculations that a fan favorite will bite the dust next year.

In the Dark Phoenix trailer, there is a brief scene showing the mutants gathered over a grave. You can easily see Beast (Nicholas Hoult) and Professor X (James McAvoy) as well as three other people holding umbrellas. There is a brief shot of Storm (Alexandra Shipp) and Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee) which leaves one umbrella unaccounted for. But who is still standing and who is beneath the ground?

ScreenRant has gathered all the evidence suggesting that the fallen mutant is none other than Mystique. The report points out that Hank McCoy is clearly in the worst shape since he had a special connection with Raven Darkholme. In addition to that, Magneto (Michael Fassbender) is also shown weeping, possibly mourning for the woman who somehow came between him and Charles Xavier.

The most compelling evidence is reportedly Jennifer Lawrence's disinterest in renewing her contract. The Academy Award nominee has been vocal about her hate for putting on the Mystique prosthetics, which takes several hours. In addition to that, Lawrence is reportedly eager to work on meatier projects. The actress may have convinced 20th Century Fox to finally kill off her character so she could move on.

Mystique isn't the only character that is believed to be the person in the grave. Quicksilver (Evan Peters) is notably absent from the funeral scene as well. Although the mutant has not yet revealed to Magneto that they are in fact related, Erik Lehnsherr might learn about his secret in Dark Phoenix and could be mourning his son's death in the aforementioned scene.
