X-Men '97 executive producer Brad Winderbaum recently provided a production update on season 2 as fans are eagerly waiting for the new season.

The first season finale that aired last week ended with a massive cliffhanger for our favorite heroes. Since then, fans have expressed their hope that the next season will come sooner than expected.

Fortunately, season 2 was already in the works prior to the series premiere. However, as everyone knows, the animation process takes a lot of time before it gets completed and ready for airing.

Winderbaum opened up about the recent progress on the production of X-Men '97 season 2 in an interview.

He revealed that they are currently in the "animatic stage" and advised fans to be patient in their wait for the new season.

"It's still an animatic phase. Animation takes so long to make as I'm sure you know. There was a great bit about this in Invincible Season 2. They just nailed it so hard, it is the greatest. And it takes a long time," the executive producer explained.

"Because the studio wants to see how successful the first season is before they greenlight the second season there's a lag. We were lucky enough to get the greenlight before we aired so there's maybe less of a lag. People are just going to have to be patient with us."

In case you're not familiar with the term "animatic," StudioBinder defined it as an "animated storyboard" where "the same images you’ve already created as a storyboard are now put into a video and can include dialogue, sound effects, and music."

In another interview, Winderbaum also assured that they are "honoring" Beau DeMayo's work for season 2 despite his firing prior to the series premiere and they are looking for a new head writer who will work on season 3, which is in the early stages of development.

For now, as Winderbaum said, fans should keep their patience as they're waiting for the new season and it is likely that it will take around a year before it premieres.

All episodes of X-Men '97 season 1 are available to stream on Disney+.
