The recently-aired episode 5 of X-Men '97 featured a secret cameo appearance from What If...? character The Watcher.
A lot of fans were reeling from the events of the episode titled "Remember It" as it concluded with the fall of Genosha and the shocking death of Gambit, Magneto, and many more characters.
However, fans have also spotted a subtle cameo from the fan-favorite Marvel animated character and it left them wondering whether it has any connection or ramifications in the future of the series.

The Watcher Appears in X-Men '97 Episode 5
The Watcher from What If...? made a brief non-speaking cameo appearance in episode 5 of X-Men '97.
He was spotted in the sky, seemingly observing the events that are unfolding in the show's universe. He showed up before the inauguration gala scenes and the subsequent attack of the Sentinels.
The character's appearance has led fans to wonder what it all means and whether it has some significance down the line.

As established in What If...?, The Watcher is an observer of the multiverse and he is not allowed to interfere with the events that are happening, even if the world is in danger.
He has also made an appearance in an episode of I Am Groot where he was also simply observing the character and did not interfere with his adventure.
It is likely that the character's appearance is just an easter egg and he wants to see what is happening in the Marvel '90s animated universe just like what we've seen him doing throughout the first two seasons of What If...?
