Wreck-It Ralph Tiana Voice Actress Opens Up About Backlash

Excitement might have been building up over Wreck-It Ralph: Ralph Breaks the Internet, however, Disney's animated comedy movie gained some controversy after fans started complaining about the film's 3D version of The Princess and the Frog princess, Tiana.

Though a lot of fans loved seeing Disney's many princesses come together in the Wreck-it Ralph sequel, some couldn't help but notice Tiana's euro-centric looks. Not only was the character's skin significantly lighter in Ralph Breaks the Internet than her own movie, but her nose was made sharper and narrower in the movie. Soon enough, Tiana's appearance sparked backlash against the movie.

Now, after Disney responded to the controversy by restoring Tiana's image "to that of an unapologetically black princess with full lips, dark skin and dark hair," Princess Tiana's voice actress in Ralph Breaks the Internet, Anika Noni Rose, has decided to speak out about the issue.

Taking to Instagram, Rose posted a series of text screenshots where she admitted that she had "been very quiet on the subject" up until that point though she had read reactions to her character and taken charge.

According to Rose, she met with the studio's animators and expressed "how important it is to little girls (and let's face it, grown women) who felt represented by her."

Thankfully, Disney was pretty open to having "an open dialogue about legacy and representation," listening to Rose and fan's concerns and then making sure that they fixed Princess Tiana's look to make her just like the Princess fans grew to love in The Princess and The Frog.

Wreck-It Ralph 2 hits cinemas November 21, 2018.
