Wonder Woman Director Doesn’t Think Shared Universes Should be a Standard

Marvel has successfully managed to launch a cinematic universe and remains a box office powerhouse 10 years later. DC has admittedly not fared well with their attempts, and now Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins is suggesting that maybe shared universes shouldn't be the standard with these films.

Talking to Total Film (via CBR), Jenkins explained:

"I think the exception to that was that Marvel had such success doing a shared universe… But that certainly shouldn't be the status quo. I think you should look at comic books. There's this huge variety of comic books, and their look and tone and world are radically different. And they don't always inevitably join together. Sometimes they do, and that's really fun, and that's that thing."

If anything, Jenkins thinks that a great pro with having a not-so-unified universe is that all the entries have been coming out differently. Wonder Woman was its own thing, and so was Joker, and Shazam!. Moving forward, we should also expect films like The Flash and The Batman to have their own unique voices.

If you ask me, I think that the DCEU would have worked out better if they just trusted the creatives. I'll admit, Batman v Superman wasn't perfect, but it was building up to something fantastic with Snyder's vision for Justice League. Too bad WB panicked and demanded everything is changed starting from Suicide Squad. As long as the films stuck to the director's vision, then the movies usually end up great.

For now, we wait for Wonder Woman 1984 to hit theaters Aug. 14.
