Wonder Woman Cinematographer Says Film Drew Inspiration From Superman And Batman Begins

Wonder Woman is hitting the big screen in a couple of days, and everyone is eager to line up to check out histories very first Diana Prince feature film. Reviews from advanced screenings of Gal Gadot's first Wonder Woman standalone have been pretty great and DC fans are eager to see things turn around for DC Extended Universe after a shaky start with Batman vs. Superman and Suicide Squad last year.

Now, as anticipation continues to build for the DCEU's first female-led film, Wonder Woman cinematographer Matthew Jensen shares with fans the source of the film's visual inspiration.

Speaking in an interview with IGN, Jensen reveals that Wonder Woman had actually taken a few cues from Superman by Richard Donner and Batman Begins.

"Every day seemed like a challenge because it was such a big and complicated movie. Just the knowledge that we were doing Wonder Woman's story, solo, a movie that a lot of people had been trying to get off the ground for over 20 years, and she is one of the pop culture icons, so there was a lot of pressure on us to do it correctly. We were setting out to make something close to Richard Donner's Superman or Batman Begins. We wanted to do her story that kind of justice so every day felt like we had that monkey on our back."

"I think it's akin to, again, Christopher Reeve opening up his shirt and revealing the "S" for the first time. That happens at about an hour into that movie and same thing with Christian Bale, he finally says "I am Batman" about an hour into the movie and I think ours is similar."

Both films made their mark in comicbook film history, so it really does make sense why Jensen and the rest of the Wonder Woman production would try to follow Superman and Batman Begins' visual styles.

Read the film's synopsis down here:

Before she was Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, Diana meets an American pilot (Chris Pine) who tells her about the massive conflict that's raging in the outside world. Convinced that she can stop the threat, Diana leaves her home for the first time. Fighting alongside men in a war to end all wars, she finally discovers her full powers and true destiny.

Wonder Woman is slated for release on June 2.
