WIzards of The Coast Teams up With ELEAGUE For Magic: The Gathering Arena Event

Turner and IMG's esports brand ELEAGUE has partnered up with Wizards of the Coast for a new weekly Magic Arena competition, and it's called THE ELEAGUE SHOWDOWN: MTG Arena. The weekly competition is presented by Intel Gamer Days (a U.S.-exclusive promotional event for Intel products), and it will be broadcastcasted on Twitch beginning Sept. 4 and run until Dec. 18.

Participants will be selected through a mix of applications and invitations, and each week will consist of a single-elimination bracket, and the winner will be called the "player ot defeat" for the next event. The winner of each weekly tournament will earn prize money but they haven't announced the amount yet. According to the release, more details will be released "in the coming days".

According to a source close to The Esports Observer, there are no plans for the weekly Magic competition to be highlighted in a show broadcasted on TBS, as they often do with ELEAGUE's livestreamed events.

This is part of Wizards of the Coast's focus on including prominent streamers and MTG pros in Magic Arena events, but hopefully, they will continue to support coverage for tabletop Magic. Recently, Wizards announced the clear path to top-level competition for next year with the new Players Tour events for tabletop and the Mythic Invitationals for Magic Arena.

Magic Arena is still currently on open beta but the digital version of the popular trading card game has been successful. According to Hasbro's Q2 report, revenue growth has increased by 28% compared to 2018's and that it was driven by digital gaming, primarily Magic Arena.
