Willem Dafoe Expresses Interest to Play Joker Opposite Joaquin Phoenix

Willem Dafoe made his return as the Green Goblin/Norman Osborn in Spider-Man: No Way Home around 20 years after he played him in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man. His comeback was well-received by fans with some even saying that his performance surpassed what he did in Spider-Man.

The Green Goblin is just one of the several villains that Dafoe has played so far in his decades-long career. But there is one role that fans have been wanting him to play: the Joker. Is there a possibility that we will ever get to see him in the role? It looks like we finally have the answer.

In an interview with GQ UK, Dafoe was asked about the possibility of him playing the Joker. However, he responded with an idea that has been in his mind for some time now. He said, "There is something interesting about, like, if there was a Joker imposter. So it would be possible to have not duelling Jokers but someone that says to be the Joker that isn't the Joker. And that kind of opens up the possibility of an interesting story, particularly if you had Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker, and then you had someone who was either imitating or riffing off what he did. I fantasised about that. But other than that I am not talking to anybody [about it], you're the first one."

It looks like Dafoe's idea for his Joker is going to be someone who is facing off Phoenix's iteration of the character. While it may sound like some sort of a "Joker-Verse" idea, it is a unique suggestion where we will see him play the Joker, not as a foe of Batman, but rather a character of its own and it could also work as a sequel to 2019's Joker. Whether it will happen or not, it is an intriguing idea nonetheless and it also shows that Dafoe has some interest to play the Joker.

Let's just wait and see if he'll ever get to play another iconic comic book villain. However, Dafoe is already part of the DCEU as he played Nuidis Vulko in Aquaman and Zack Snyder's Justice League so that might stop him from the opportunity of playing the Joker.
