Will Moviegoers Continue Supporting Star Wars After Episode IX?

Star Wars fans might be going mad with anticipation for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker now that Lucasfilm's released a brand new trailer for the film, but it seems like there's some concern that Episode IX might really mark the end of the entire franchise.

Not only is The Rise of Skywalker expected to close the curtain on Lucasfilm's sequel trilogy, but the film is also expected to culminate the entire Skywalker saga. Seeing how the studio plans to move away from the Skywalker saga with its upcoming films and series, Forbes presents one major question for the franchise – will Star Wars continue to thrive after Episode IX, or will it come to an end?

Disney might have some major plans for the franchise after The Rise of Skywalker premieres this December, however, Forbes writer Scott Mendelson wonders whether a new direction would really work for a fading brand.

The big question is whether audiences will still continue gathering in large crowds for Star Wars films when these movies are no longer directly tied to the Skywalker saga?

It's a pretty acceptable question. The Star Wars sequel trilogy has been placing its bet on nostalgia. Now that the franchise is gearing up to head towards a new narrative with the trilogies being prepared by Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson and Game of Thrones showrunners DB Weiss and David Benioff, one can only wonder whether fans will continue sticking around to support Lucasfilm's galaxy far, far away.
