  • Quick Answer: Grogu remains a "child" due to his species' slow aging, but he now blends Jedi training with Mandalorian combat skills for his upcoming cinematic mission.

There’s no denying that Grogu has become one of the most beloved Star Wars characters since first appearing in The Mandalorian in 2019.

Famously known as “The Child,” Grogu’s irresistible cuteness and resemblance to the iconic Jedi Master Yoda quickly led fans to nickname him “Baby Yoda.”

But as time passes and Grogu takes on a major role in the upcoming The Mandalorian & Grogu, many fans are wondering whether the Order 66 survivor will eventually grow into a full-fledged Jedi. Here’s what creator Dave Filoni had to say about it.

Dave Filoni acknowledged that children do grow up, but Grogu is far from an ordinary child. In fact, there is still a mystery surrounding the character that may explain why he has remained so young.

“It’s always a good question. I mean, kids grow up, right? It’s always an interesting question,” he told ComicBook.

However, Filoni noted that there are certain aspects of Grogu’s mystery that he cannot discuss in detail without revealing too much.

“We’re always balancing between giving away too much of the mystery or saying too many things because one of the reasons people like characters like Yoda and Grogu is there’s an element of mystery to them,” he explained. “And so, I think that factors in, too.”

Long before Grogu was introduced, only a few beings like Yoda had appeared in the Star Wars universe. Their species remains exceptionally rare and, to this day, officially unnamed.

So now that fans have been introduced to a younger version of a Yoda-like character, Grogu may remain youthful for quite some time.

“There was no young version of a Yoda character. So, now we have that and I think we’re always kind of judging and looking at things long term for what does the story need and what does the character need, if it makes sense,” Filoni continued.

Filoni also clarified that Grogu’s aging process has little to do with how time works in the galaxy far, far away, stressing instead that it leans more into fantasy storytelling.

“Yeah, not so much so,” Filoni added. “It’s more in the fantasy world.”

After dominating the small screen alongside Din Djarin in the three-season series, The Mandalorian, Grogu is heading to the big screen in The Mandalorian & Grogu.

Despite still appearing young, fans are about to see a more powerful “Baby Yoda” after developing new abilities with the help of Din Djarin and Luke Skywalker.

“Grogu has… leveled up a bit,” director Jon Favreau revealed. “We know that previously he trained with Luke Skywalker, so he’s got a little Jedi influence; plus, he’s an apprentice Mandalorian, which makes him very unique. It’s time for Grogu to go out in the field and for Dad to show him the ropes.”

Based on the trailer, Grogu may even have his own mission to fulfill in The Mandalorian & Grogu

While it remains unclear what exactly lies ahead for the beloved character, fans will find out when the film hits theaters on May 22, 2026.
